Big box stores—those being physically large retail establishments, usually part of a chain—have their place when it comes to convenience. The “all-in-one” shopping experience means you can pick up everything from groceries to linens and even hardware and equipment. But is a big box store really your best bet for gardening and landscaping supplies? Why Choose a Nursery?
There are some reasons why you might be selling yourself short if you choose the local big box store over a nursery. Here are some things to consider before making that decision.
One of the biggest downfalls of going to a big box store is the lack of knowledge and experience. If you know what you’re looking for, this might not be an issue. But if you have any sort of questions about what plants will work best on your specific property, or what mulch product is best for you, you’re likely out of luck.
At Nature’s Mulch, we can say from experience that people have a lot of questions when it comes to their landscape.
They want to know…
How much mulch do I need?
What grass seed should I buy?
What are composts made of?
And those are honestly just some of the questions we get on a regular basis. But if you ask these types of questions at a big box store, they’re likely not going to have answers.
In their defense, landscape supplies are just some of the hundreds and hundreds of different products they carry, and they can’t be expected to be educated on all of them. Unless they have personal experience using any of the products they carry, there’s a good chance they aren’t going to be able to provide you with much guidance.
The lack of knowledge and experience from employees at big box stores really does leave you on your own not only when making a selection amongst various products but also after you apply or install them. You certainly can’t return to the store or call them up after buying something to ask questions about how to use it.
But when you purchase through a trusted nursery, you gain a partner who wants to provide you with ongoing guidance. They want to see you succeed.
At Nature’s Mulch, we get lots of questions after clients have gone home with our products and we’re always happy to help.
For instance, people want to know: What is this growing on my mulch?
Or, sometimes they want answers on how to water plants that they’ve installed.
Maybe they don’t even have a question about a product or material they purchased, but a more general landscaping question such as, what can I do about summer pests?
We love being available to guide our clients through the process of creating a landscape that they love.
